I’ve always been fascinated by the thematic imagery of the EX-S Gundam and Alice and Wonderland. In the story “Gundam Sentinel,” the EX-S Gundam, while being a human-piloted machine, is primarily controlled by an experimental A.I. named ALICE. This tiny tidbit, and a few joking sketches by the original creators, have lead to multitudes of fan artwork spanning almost thirty years, placing these two seemingly unrelated characters together (including my own previous marker-only drawing from 2011).
I took inspiration for this one after reading “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” to my daughter and seeing the original illustrator, John Tenniel’s, colorized version of his original drawing of Alice meeting the Cheshire Cat.
This drawing was done in three stages. The linework for each element was drawn seperately- the EX-S Gundam on A3 paper, while Alice and the Cheshire Cat were drawn on A4. Each was then scanned in and colored via photoshop before being combined towards the end. The final size of the original is about 16.3″ x 11.5″ at 600 DPI (dots/pixels per inch), so about almost 10,000 x 7,000 pixels wide and high. The version you see here is only about 1500 x 1000 pixels.
